Delano Chamber Orchestra
Director: Dr. Wesley DeSpain
The Delano Chamber Orchestra's 2023-24 season includes legendary masterworks as well as a Wichita premiere. We will also hold our annual concerto competition for graduating high school seniors. All concerts begin at 3:00pm at West Side Baptist Church. Here's a quick run down:
Sunday, October 1, 2023- “Heavenly Music:
This concert will feature not one but TWO works for TWO soloists: Vivaldi’s Concerto in G Minor for Two Cellos, Cody Flory Robertson and Blake Lawlor, cellist. Also playing will be The Passion of Angels for Two Harps and Chamber Orchestra, Jane Hyde and Ann Reddy, Harpists. This work was written in 1995 by Marjan Mozetich, a composer who hails from Canada.
Between these two works will be Five Variants on ‘Dives and Lazarus’ for String Orchestra and Harp by Ralph Vaughan Williams, a work of spectacular beauty, power, and genius. Joining the DCO will be select students from the Derby High School Philharmonic Orchestra.
February 4, 2024- “The Classical Ideal”
The works on this concert will delight audience members with the graceful and refine sounds of the classical era of Western music. The orchestra will perform Symphony No. 2 by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, a contemporary of Mozart. A movie about Bologne’s life entitled “Chevalier” was released in 2022. A Musical quiz will be given to see if those gathered can distinguish between the music of Chevalier and Mozart…how fun! The orchestra will also present Tchaikovsky’s musical reflections on the classical era via his Suite No. 4, Mozartiana.
Trumpeter Sarah Freeland will perform Haydn’s beloved Concerto for Trumpet, a work considered by many to be Haydn’s most popular concerto. Once you hear it, you’ll know why.
April 21, 2024- “Rising Stars”
Two or three graduating high school seniors will be featured as soloists in the Young Artists’ Concert. Audiences are always amazed by the artistry of these rising stars!
There is nothing quite like hearing these marvelous works of art in a concert setting. We hope to see you there!
